Project Citizen Annual State Showcase
On May 16, 2008 at the State House in Augusta, Maine, middle school students gathered to share their public policy service-learning projects. They participated in oral hearings to share their ideas and solutions with one another and to adult policy-makers. During the public viewing of projects, each group of students displayed portfolios and binders highlighting their reserach and documentation. Students from Holbrook Middle School (MSAD 63) were recognized at the awards ceremony as this year's oral hearing winners with their project, The Warning Zones - Think Fast, Slow Down, Safe a Life! Each participating class worked for several weeks examining a local public policy issue by studying the impact of the problem on the community. They evaluated alternative solutions to the problem, proposed an agreed-upon public policy solution, and created a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities in adopting their proposed policy. 2008 Participating School Districts MSAD 59 Madison Jr. High School - Grade 8Project Title: The Dangers of Imported Food MSAD 63 Holbrook Middle School, Grade 8Project Title: The Warning Zones - Think Fast, Slow Down, Save a Life!
