2008 Student Summit

Got Green? Who Can Make a Difference? We Can!

Our eighth annual Student Summit held March 27-28, 2008, at the University of Southern Maine, was a great success. Over 300 students and educators from across New England attended the two-day environmental Summit. We were delighted to be partnered with a group of students from the REAL School in Windham. The REAL School is an adventure-based alternative school serving Southern Maine students in grades 7-12.

The REAL School students helped plan, organize, and facilitate all aspects of the Summit. They chose the "Got Green" theme to inspire students to take action on pressing environmental issues and needs in their communities.

Throughout the two-day event, students participated in workshops focused on environmental topics such as water quality, sustainable heating, greening school grounds, and global climate change. In addition to the workshops, participants heard an inspiring and educational keynote address, engaged in team builder activities, and took part in a food drive.

Students also gave presentations and exhibited information about their own service-learning projects. These projects spanned all academic content areas and addressed a wide variety of community problems/needs.
