"Inexperienced Drivers, Few Survivors " Exemplarly Portfolio Winners and Maine Representatives at the National Conference of State Legislatures!

On May 15, 2009 KIDS Consortium was host to the annual State Showcase held at the State House in Augusta, Maine. Middle school students gathered to share their public policy service-learning projects with one another and to adult policy-makers. During the public viewing of projects, each group of students displayed portfolios and binders highlighting their research and documentation.

Students from Lyman Moore Middle School were recognized at the awards ceremony as this year's oral hearing winners with their project, Cyber Bullying.

Each participating class worked for several weeks examining a local public policy issue by studying the impact of the problem on the community. They evaluated alternative solutions to the problem, proposed an agreed-upon public policy solution, and created a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities in adopting their proposed policy.

Public Policy is difficult to define, so it was with great pleasure that I watched very young students who really get it! So many worthwhile projects, so many thoughtful students and teachers, so great a contribution that KIDS is making toward increasing civic engagement!!!
