FREE One-day Workshop: May 14, 2010
Cole Museum, Bangor, Maine

Taking Action Across Disciplines
Using Social Studies Knowledge and Skills

This special one-day FREE workshop, being held at the Cole Land Transportation Museum, will promote civic action (A3 in Maine’s Learning Results for Social Studies) and interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students. Learn how creating integrated service-learning units can engage students to take action in their communities.

We encourage everyone to extend an invitation to a team of at least three: A building administrator and two teachers (one of whom teaches social studies) of the same grade level, ready, willing, and able to work together on an interdisciplinary unit.

PLEASE NOTE: The Cole Museum has generously offered to pay for two substitutes ($50 per teacher) per school/district. Submit an invoice the day of the training, or after the training. Contact Pat at the Museum for questions on reimbursement/invoicing.

Participants will receive our well-known KIDS As Planners Guidebook (valued at $29.95), useful tools and resources, contact hours certificate, light breakfast and lunch. 8:30-2:30

What do students need to meet the challenges of the 21st Century? How do we teach students to use social studies knowledge and skills to understand contemporary issues such as the environment, health care, or local-to-foreign policies?

Participants will:

  • Discuss what instructional practices are needed to prepare students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
  • Learn how service-learning differs from other community oriented experiences.
  • Hear from peers about integrated, standards-based units that inspire students to engage in solving authentic issues in their community.
  • Learn how other content areas can help to meet Maine Learning Results: Parameters for Essential Instruction Social Studies Standard A.
  • Dialogue with others on the successes and challenges to collaborating with peers to create and teach integrated units.
  • Have time to plan with colleagues and administrators on next steps needed to create interdisciplinary units that incorporates service-learning as an instructional methodology.

Schools who would benefit may include those who are considering:

  • civic service action
  • developing integrated curriculum units
  • promoting student academic and civic engagement
  • reducing dropout rates
  • creating authentic, relevant learning

As educators, we strive to not only share our knowledge with students, but to also teach them how they can make a difference in our world. Service-Learning easily serves as the approach to show students the importance of giving back. Ultimately, they learn that their ideas and actions are important to society.
