Service-Learning Institute for Educators
June 24-27, 2008 - Auburn, Maine
GRADUATE CREDIT REQUIREMENTS
Discover the steps in creating a quality service-learning experience! This Institute will be interactive and collaborative, with experienced practitioners sharing their creativity and expertise. Participants will develop project ideas and practice strategies integrated with curriculum requirements and assessment models in order to build a collaborative environment in the classroom, help students reflect, and celebrate accomplishments. Have fun experimenting with the KIDS award-winning service-learning model. Mandatory attendance is expected at each of the four days.
Institute participants will be able to:
- articulate the components of the KIDS model of service-learning and how service-learning differs from community service, and other models of community-learning;
- plan and implement a high quality service-learning project for diverse learners using the tools and strategies found in the KIDS AS Planners Guidebook;
- build a collaborative environment in the classroom by experiencing one in this institute and reflecting upon strategies used;
- advocate for service-learning based on its impacts on students, teachers, and communities;
- build partnerships and utilize school and community resources in the process of planning and carrying out service-learning projects;
- understand the importance of reflection and facilitate reflective activities that build upon student learning styles;
- develop a service-learning plan that integrates curriculum and assesses local and state standards.
Who Should Attend?
The Institute is appropriate for educators new to service-learning, as well as experienced service-learning practitioners, who wish to expand their “toolbox” and reinvigorate their practice.

Registration deadline is: May 23, 2008. Sign up early, limited to 40 participants. Registration fee: $400.00 / Includes registration, breakfast and lunch all days, KIDS As Planners Guidebook, Bibliography and Resources, and contact hours certificate.
Participants are responsible for additional meals, lodging, and graduate credits.
Location and Lodging
The Institute will be held at the The Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch, Auburn, Maine. The Hilton Garden overlooks the Androscoggin Falls and River in the heart of Downtown Auburn. The Portland International Jetport is just 35 miles

Graduate Credits (optional, not a coure requisite)
Graduate Credits are available from Salem State College/Northeast Consortium.
- $175 for 2 Grad Credits: Grading will consist of participation (50%), and portfolio of reflections and templates for service-learning projects completed during the Institute (50%)
- $200 for 3 Grad Credits: Same requirements as 2 credits listed above, plus additional pre/post reading, writing, and portfolio components
