Revised Maine Learning ResultsIn October 2007, the Maine State Board of Education approved a revised set of Learning Results that have the potential to transform social studies education in a way that compels all Maine young people to become active citizens in their communities. The new social studies standards place great emphasis on the practical application of processes, knowledge and skills. The objective is to ensure that, “students apply critical thinking, a research process, and discipline-based processes and knowledge from civics/government, economics, geography, and history in authentic contexts.” A key performance indicator in the standards calls for all students, at all grade spans, to select, plan, and participate in a civic action or service-learning project. Throughout 2008, KIDS Consortium will be working closely with the Maine Department of Education and a network of non-profit education and social studies organizations to provide resources and trainings to Maine educators and community organizations. The new standards were recently profiled by the National Youth Leadership Council in the on-line journal, the Generator.
