We the People: Project Citizen
Maine Policy Projects

Since 2004, over 500 Maine students have been involved with Project Citizen! Here are a few examples of policy topics youth have addressed:

  • Middle school students from both Portland and Mount Dessert Island chose Underage Drinking as their public policy.
  • Elementary students from Eddington implemented “Sun Safety” policies throughout their school district and beyond.
  • Elementary students from Lewiston implemented school policies to stop Childhood Obesity. They increased physical fitness opportunities by adding recess back into their schedule. To increase opportunities for all students to participate in gym, an additional Physical Education Teacher was hired.
  • Middle school students from Minot worked to change their School Handbook to offer a more diverse choice of classes.
  • Middle school students from Portland chose to look at policies involving gun safety, and education for Shaken Baby Syndrome.
  • Students from Thomaston collaborated with their town officials to build a Community Center. The building was previously the State Prison.
  • Middle school students from Cumberland/North Yarmouth, worked with school officials to set the criteria for magazine selections at their school library. They also worked on addressing a policy around the designated area for “recreational” reading.

Thanks again for the opportunity to participate in the Project Citizen Showcase. The students' work seems to improve each year. I've noticed that the young people have an increasingly better grasp of the meaning of public policy and how to influence it. KIDS Consortium continues to make a big difference in many lives by sponsoring wonderful programs and encouraging participation.
